Wordpress blog header loads too slowly

We have 2 blogs on subdirectories (not subdomains) of our site that use WordPress. The blog looks and works great, but the header loads too slowly. The blog uses a custom theme so that the header matches the rest of the site. The entire page loads before the header does. The header needs to load first, or everything needs to load at the same time.
