A household clothes’ iron (mass m, surface area As, made of low‐carbon steel) is initially at the temperature of the surrounding air T¬∞. The walls, floor, and ceiling of the room the iron is in are at temperature Ts. At time t = 0, the iron is plugged into the wall outlet, creating a heat input to the iron from the heater of q̇. The iron can be modeled as a flat plate of thickness t. • Derive a dimensionless parameter whose value will help you decide whether to model this problem as a 0‐D or 1‐D transient problem. • Assuming that it is appropriate to model this problem as a 0‐D transient case, derive the governing equation and appropriate initial and boundary conditions (if needed). List any additional assumptions required for this model to be appropriate. (Not all required parameters are listed in the statement above. Assume that these other necessary parameters are known and include them in your analysis.) • Describe how you would solve this problem numerically, including appropriate equations.
