First of all, to select the smallest possible set of samples, in which all characteristic values (0-5) are available for each individual parameter (I-X), you can program an initial heuristic that orders the samples to be considered as candidates according to the lowest frequency of their mode(of their characteristic values), which will allow a higher probability of choosing the samples with the highest diversity of different characteristic values for each individual parameter, and which contributes to maximize the presence of all characteristic values. With this initial ordering, the next step will be to choose the following samples that have different modes, in order to maximize, again, the presence of the different characteristic values. Finally, the next steps will consist of determining the next samples, recursively applying the previous steps. That would be roughly the algorithm to use, that I can do in the spreadsheet directly. For the other options I could consider a simpler algorithm, taking into account some elements already mentioned. Anyway, I would have to clarify some details with you. I do Excel macros. I think it has to be done doing for each column a search cell by cell and boolean variables for each digit (0-9), that stop when it fill all digits, then select the rows.

Hello SIR, I don't think that what are you looking for is as simple as your description, as soon as you talk about the best possible combination (probability algorithms come into play) it means that your problem is a little more complex, I am an engineer in the industrial computing with mathematical bases with an experience of more than 4 years in vba in my daily routine, I would like to collaborate with you on this subject, there are a lot of sorting algorithm that we can analyse together before making the choice of the one that we will implement according to your requirements (temporal and spatial). I think your problem is the generalized set cover problem which is NP-Hard. If you really want the true minimum sample set, then the solution would be A* with a heuristic. Another solution would be ILP with Gurobi. There also exist approximation solutions. I could implement all three for you and compare in terms of time and accuracy on real data. I suggest you forget about Excel and consider a real programming language such as Java or C++.

Hallo, ich arbeite mit Datensortierungsalgorithmen (QuickSort, Heapshort, BubbleSort, ...) seit längerer Zeit und insgesamt 15x Jahren als SW-Entwickler. Persönlich würde ich schnell mit meinem Matlab-Lizenz den besten Algorithmus finden und danach es in Python implementieren. Ich denke, dass man es mit Excel gut kombinieren kann. Wichtig ist die Definition des Sortirungsalgorithmus (wie definiert man the "smalles possible Subset"). Sollte die Performance extrem wichtig sein müssten man runter auf die C-Sprache kommen und das Sortierprogramm von Excel ausführen. Ich denke und hoffe, dass es mit einem gescheiten Verfahren, dies nicht notwendig sein wird. Selbst im Notfall, habe ich sowas gemacht und daher könnte ich es umsetzen. Örtlich bin ich in Stuttgart aber natürlich mit einem kurzem Gespräch kann ich das Projekt starten und durchführen. Lizenzen, Rechner habe ich selber.
