CALCULATE THE COST BASIS FOR TWO MUTUAL FUNDS I SOLD IN 2015. I owned these DWS funds in one case since 1996, the another since about 2003. In both cases the dividends and capital gains were reinvested into the funds. The 1099-B doesn't make sense. In one case it shows a big loss even though I sold the shares for substantially more than my initial investment. Maybe that's because of the reinvestment, or maybe I was paying capital gains along the way (the fund dropped in value a great deal in 2015, though was still far ahead of 1996)? I have no idea. I have not only the 1099-B but the full transcripts of all transactions and reinvestments. The deliverables are telling me exactly what should go into my tax returns, along with a worksheet showing how those numbers were derived. The entire amount of the sale (both funds, together) was roughly $23,000, so this isn't big money. Still, I want it to be right for the IRS. Thank you.
