Project IV: Professionally Speaking: Rhetorical Analysis and Composition of a Professional Web Text Project IV asks you to make a multimodal argument about a current issue or problem in your future professional field that you have already addressed in either Project II or III to the public. Project IV also requires that you describe, contextualize, and defend the choices you made in presenting your multimodal argument via a designer’s statement. What We Are Writing Using the readings we have discussed together so far, revisit an issue in your field that you examined for Project II or III. You will create an argument in a visual, multimodal genre: an infographic designed for your audience to understand and share. You will also write a 650-850-word companion designer’s statement addressed to me and the class to analyze the rhetorical composition decisions you made given the genres and formats. To make the project easier, we will break down the process. Your infographic should: define the issue or problem within your future professional field with sources. convince your audience that the issue is significant and current for your field and for the public. use appeals (ethos, pathos, and logos) appropriate to the audience and message. balance visual design elements and text to communicate your message. use and cite data from at least five non-encyclopedia sources. Your designer’s statement (650-850-word) should include: reflection on how your analysis of the significance of the issue for your field and your audience influenced your infographic design. detailed analysis of how you structured your design choices and information presentation to be compelling for this audience and help convince them of your argument and purpose, including attention to rhetorical velocity. a timeline map of how you see your infographic unfolding given the specific rhetorical, modal, and design choices you’ve made. specific language from the readings/images assigned as class work. Why We Are Writing First and foremost, this project should introduce you to the ways professionals in your field communicate. Select presentation media/modes to most effectively meet your audience’s needs For Whom We Are Writing The rhetorical purpose of Project 3 as a whole is to: convince your audience of the public that the issue you address is significant and demands attention convince your audience that your multimodal argument addresses that issue in an appropriate and thoughtful way As a professional, you will be asked to create arguments and manipulate information in a variety of genres and formats, some of which will require the translation of information between modes (e.g. linguistic to visual, linguistic to gestural). This assignment asks you to do such translation and also document your process.
