Ultra-wideband (UWB) is an emerging technology for high speed wireless communications systems and the multi-band orthogonal frequency division modulation (MB-OFDM) [1, 2] scheme has been adopted for wireless personal area networks. However, MB-OFDM demands large peak-to-average ratio (PAR) for the signals. Systems with large PAR require a linear power amplifier (PA) to back off from its maximum output power significantly to ensure that the peak of the envelope is within the linear range of operation, resulting in poor power efficiency. The problem can be solved by polar modulation or envelope elimination and restoration (EER). Instead of transmitting information in Cartesian or I=Q format, the polar signal is used instead. The phase modulation in a polar transmitter can be generated digitally, upconverted and amplified by a highly efficient, but nonlinear power amplifier which is controlled by the envelope modulation.
