We have developed a Java based web application which is now 3 years old. As the system has grown we are now seeing some limitations to how the original design has been implemented. The system uses a MySQL database and operates using an RDS instance on AWS. We also use hibernate for database communication to convert the Java objects to MySQL queries. We are seeing issues where the database locks when adding new data, particularly during peak usage hours, and while we have skilled technicians in house, we are a bit short in terms of strong database admin expertise. The database tables are normalized and we have recently approached the maximum join limit of 61 tables. We require a MySQL expert to hopefully advise us on the best approach to optimise our database's performance. We can provide example queries and access to the system once the suitable resource has been found.
