Fix rating display error in Magento

In our Magento store when people leave a review it asks for 1 rating, yet for some reason on the product reviews page it displays 1, 2 or sometimes 3 ratings which all say "rating". Please can someone help me fix this so it only displays the 1 correct rating and explain to me what has happened to make it work incorrectly as it currently does? Thanks.
