Well machine learning is quite easy in R, and as long as you're not trying to break out any neural networks, it should be quite easy to accomplish any initial machine learning tasks you might have. I would start with a model selection and then more onto model comparison. Since I don't know if this is a classification, regression, or clustering task, it's hard to describe the evaluation method I would use.
