Fix JSON syntax error in Joomla

I am using Joomla v3.8.0 and a component called Emerald (content restriction) from MintJoomla. The programmer MUST be familiar with Joomla- I think this will be a simple fix for someone with Joomla knowledge. I have been using the Emerald component- it works fine... however recently I learned about another feature- to be able to control content restriction directly in an article/module... but for some reason it is not recognizing the tags- AND when I add more extended parameters (see documentation linked below), using the "{}" brackets, I get the error (so i have a feeling that it's not reading any of the special characters correctly): ERROR DECODING JSON DATA: SYNTAX ERROR The documentation is at: [login to view URL]
