I was born in Mexico, raised in the US, and now live and work in the Kurdistan Region of Northern Iraq. I've been affected negatively by corruption from the West, East, and South. But I've also been benefited by it. I've kept quiet when politicians and businesses have engaged in corrupt practices that directly or indirectly benefited me, family, or friends. It's so easy to say that "I wasn't the one who did this" or "the benefit I get from their actions will allow me to in turn benefit others". And when I've said those things, or people that I agree with have said those things, they were 100% true. But then, they were also 100% true when the people who were hurting us did so under the same words.
Today I sit in front of my MacBook Pro in my house in the relatively peaceful Kurdish capitol city of Erbil. Apart from doing freelance jobs here and there, I mainly work on feature films, about one every year or two. Lately they've been action movies about ISIS, the fight against ISIS, and the horrors committed by ISIS. 85 kilometers to the West of where I create "fiction", Mosul is occupied by the real ISIS, where real people are fighting them right now, and real horrors are being committed by them as I sit safely in front of my MacBook Pro. Before ISIS our movies were about the genocide against the Kurds, and we shot them as mass graves were discovered in the south.
I don't know if this qualifies me or not, or if I answered your question. Either way, I'm out of characters.
