In Honduras there is no hunger, but a problem of child malnutrition that affects a 27 percent of children in the Central American country, according to a report of the World Food Programme of the United Nations (WFP). The percentage of child malnutrition is needed to be reduced because it is having a high social cost of about $ 760 million. Society fails to recieve this amount of financial resources, allocated for the malnutrition, precisely because it is not possible that children reach adulthood without joining the market competitively. In a March, sponsored by the WFP and other institutions, and headed by Honduran Vice President, María Antonieta Guillén, she told reporters that the Government chaired by Porfirio is thatboosting social programmes to reduce infant mortality rates. The 73.4 per cent of households live in poverty, 50.7% receiving less than $1.00 dollar a day, and extreme poverty is concentrated in a 56.1% in the rural area and 87.6% in the rural West having a restricted access to income, education and health services. The cost of malnutrition is estimated at $781 million dollars, equivalent to nearly 10.6% of GDP. Honduras is a very poor country, basically supported by agriculture, which employs two-thirds of its workforce and produces two-thirds of what is exported. The manufacturing industry is scarce, employs 9% of the workforce and generates 20% of exports.
