Hi Freelancers, We have an Amazon EC2 Linux server - Red Hat which is running a web-site. The web designer told me that his FTP access stop working. I then asked the "sys-admin" who helps us manage the server to look at it, and he says that he can login with ftp user, but then there's something with permissions of folders and the user doesn't have access.. something like that... he was doing additional diagnostics regarding that. Here's the current issue: We usually logged in to server via Putty/ssh and also used .ppk file since AWS seems to require that. Now, we can't login to the server anymore. We always used to login with username: ec2-user , and then we can switch to Root user. But now, when we try to connect with Putty/ssh, and type in username: ec2-user, the ssh terminal immediately says "Server refused key" , and Putty says: "disconnected: no supported authentication methods available" . If i try the same, and try to enter "root" username, it says: Authenticating with public key "imported-openssh-key" Please login as the user "ec2-user" rather than the user "root". Then it just closes. I don't know what may have caused this. The web server is still running just fine, but we can't login to it anymore (as described above). We do have full login to AWS EC2 Console. We need help with the following: 1. Diagnosing this to see what have happened 2. Restoring our Root access and creating FTP user so it works properly 3. Creating an FTP user and make sure it works properly 4. Offer options to set-up automatic daily backup of the server, set-up the backup and show how to backup/restore. Looking forward hearing back from you!

Hello, I have over 9 years experience as an Linux admin and strong experience with EC2.. there can be several reasons why this could happen.. one of them can be if there was changed permissions of the .ssh file in the home directory on changed some settings in ssh configuration as well as some others.. I think that you will need to do a recovery if you dont have instance backup and probably detach the EBS volume and attach it to another instance and repair the issue

Please initiate a chat for the same. Also you have to pay only if we are solving your problem, otherwise no payment. Thanks Ayushi

Hello, from what you're saying I'd say that your server is compromised. It's not problem to get the tasks done you want but you *SHOULD* reinstall the whole machine. After a system has been compromised there is no way to make 100% sure that there isn't a backdoor of any kind left and trusting a system like yours is a really bad idea. I'm not trying to sell you a reinstall of your machine but you should consider it. Refused ssh keys aren't a good sign and usually show that somebody tempered with the keys on the server side. Also, if the logon via ssh was only possible with the use of keys, the likelihood of a compromised software (website), which allowed the hacker to gain root access, is near it's max. If you want to know more or have questions feel free to contact me through freelancer.com. KR, Oliver

IT Professional with 9 years experience, specialization in virtualization & cloud computing. AWS Certified. I have a couple of solutions we can try if you still have original .pem file. If that does not work, we have to recreate the instance by creating an AMI of this instance.
