Big Island Expressions, a digital and B&M retailer headquartered on the big island of Hawaii, is hiring a web designer/developer for initial site build and ongoing enhancements. The company focuses on high quality, locally made (in and around Hawaii) artisan crafts, lifestyle products, outdoor gear and other items that "inject joy into your life”, products that enhance the Aloha lifestyle. Up to 10 main content pages, including around 100 products.
Site technology will consist of WordPress and WooCommerce. Primary purpose of the site will be to generate product sales, product information is secondary. Site will help others learn more about the business, allow them to buy products, submit contact messages, and link to partner/vendor sites. Long-term (not in this project) the site will feature online community functionality.
The visual metaphors, graphic design and color scheme of site will be hip, cool, tropical feel, cutting edge, friendly, casual, personal, affordable.
The style to be communicated will be serene, spiritual, professional, hip, funky, natural/organic, high tech, FUN, playful, down to earth, mellow, comforting, caring, energetic, festive.

The expectation is that you will create a design mockup fit for a wordpress installation. Once approved (a couple rounds of reasonable changes to be expected), the design will be cut and coded into HTML5 and other latest standards compliant technologies/methodologies. The wordpress installation will be made on your own development server. You will provide a detailed installation guide listing all plugins and other 3rd party components applied. Any changes to the wordpress functionality should be built according to best practices to allow for upgrades. Once finalized, we will work together to migrate the system to the production environment.
