I've been using proxy caches for many many years but as more and more of employees work from home, there is a problem which is starting to show up. For work, they have their browser set to the office proxy and after work, they forget to disable that so all their traffic ends up being through the office network. This means our proxy is now handling all of their traffic using up our bandwidth. From remote, they often download huge spreadsheets, ISO and other files for work but I would like to set up a means by which this could be controlled. I would like to solve this problem using a two port openwrt router to be installed at each of their locations, between their LAN and router/modem to transparently direct packets based on requests.

Dear Sir, I am Thomas, a 22 years old french student that just from university in 2010. Back when I was a kid, I only had a computer to play with, so I spent all my time on it. That's why I now have more than 7 years of experience in Linux systems administration, and I have knowledge with the most popular Linux distributions. I worked as a network/system administrator at various companies where I set up WebServer, DNS servers, Databases, Monitoring, Backups, Scripting jobs, Virtualisation and so on. You can checkout my profile and see how much Linux-related project I successfuly completed. Please come and have a chat with me, I am kind and helpful. Regards,

Hi Dear, I've read your question and I think that the best solution is not to use a transparent content redirection, there are other solutions that can be used by you. If you consider this I can explain to you which solution fits your requirement and resolve the issue. I need only to know which proxy are you using actually and which operating system are using the employees, also working time. Thank you. Alex.

My proposal is to solve this by setting up a squid instance on each of the openwrt boxes. OpenWRT should be no problem, I am writing through one such router right now. We should set up these squid instances to conditionally choose between forwarding traffic to your organization's squid proxy (cache-peer directive), based on your criteria, and resolving them themselves. Obviously we would disable any actual caching on these machines (or not, whatever you prefer). I expect this to take a few hours.

i think for your setup you need a vpn (openvpn) with only the network resources accessible from your client. in addition all the traffic from your office network to the client will be encrypted and no traffic can be intercepted.
