We are developing a home automation system. We are investigating the possibility of using existing low cost consumer devices as control panels to this system - where the interface will be delivered as a series of web pages, hosted on a local PC-based server. We are considering devices like - hp iPaq (the iPaq Classic 114 looks especially suitable) - Apple iPhone - Apple iPod and need to know how easy it would be to completely replace the operating system and/or system software with a basic kernel / window manager that supports - the devices own touchscreen functionality - wired and wifi access. - single button sleep mode (i.e. just blank screen) - boot straight to a full screen web browser, pointing at the local server. The deliverables for this project are any software, flashcard images, etc. and full instructions on how to carry out the conversion.
