Objective: To develop a small application that will serve contextually based advertisements to users. Outline: This product will be installed by user's permission only. This application needs to work with Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Netscape. The application will read the domain of the webpage a user is visting. The core of the domain will be compared to a list on the user's machine. If there is a match, a URL to an advertisement is called. More description: The application needs to be very small, perhaps 50K or less. The application will have two main components: The application that reads the domain of the webpage, and the text file that will contain the list of valid domains. The text file should be encrypted. When the application reads the domain, it does not need to read the whole domain, just the section until the .com. For example, "[login to view URL]" The application will read the URL of the webpage the user is visiting and compare it to the list on the user's machine. If there is a match, then a URL will be called so that an appropriate advertisement will be called. The list of URL's on the user's machine will be broken down into categories. Each different category will call a different URL (for example, travel or finance) The text file of the URL's to be placed on the user's machine must be encrypted. The text file of the URL's to be placed on the user's machine must be modifiable before the installation occurs. No risk will be taken to access user's machines after they choose to install the software. There should be the ability to remove the software from the "Add/Remove Programs" Control Panel. The user will be prompted several times before the removal of the software is complete. The user should not have to be connected to the internet to remove the software.
