Change a function in matlab to operate recursively

I have written a function that has 2 for loops in it. The function is called function [a,b]=periodicfraction(p,q) ( this function contains 2 for loops inside it). I would like to have a new function written function [a,b]=recursivefraction(p,q) that operates the same just done recursively and without for loops.
