I have an XLS spreadsheet (120 rows by 8 columns) which contains descriptions, caffeine content, price, etc for a number of products. (this is for a store that sells tea).
I need the data from the spreadsheet to be modified so that I can import Sheet 1 into InDesign and make it into a printed menu/catalog.
- The prices are currently calculated by referencing sheet 2. (for example, the price of one of the items looks like this “=VLOOKUP(B25;$Sheet2.$C$4:$U$174;19;0)”) These need to be converted into simple strings of numbers (2 decimal places) with a dollar sign before them, i.e., “$8.99”.
- Column A can be deleted, it is just a spacer.
- In the xls, there is an extra row (colored light grey) for padding between each product. These need to be removed.
- Each category of tea has a "header" row — this can stay, but if possible it would be best if the cells were merged into one, similar to how you can do this in HTML using the “colspan” attribute. (I am not sure if you can even do this with Excel)
- The Caffeine and Antioxidant columns can be deleted
- The remaining columns (Origin, Steep Time, Steep Temperature, and Price per Ounce) should be combined into the Name column.
- The numbers in the temperature column each need to have a degree symbol (°) placed after them.
- The steep time and temperature should be separated by a comma
- “/oz” should be placed after the price
- Each item in this first column should be on its own line.
So after you are finished, each product will consist of just two columns. An example of how this first column should read is:
“Sencha Green
Japan
2-3 min, 175°
$8.99/oz”
And of course the second column is just the description like it is now.
