Western theory development around cultural learning styles
Learning styles, according to Honey and Mumford’s classification are divided into four, ranging in gradations from the Reflector, Theorist, Pragmatist and Activist (Honey & Mumford, 1982). These base styles can be further distinguished by additional modalities such as the visual, auditory and olfactory. Complex learning style preferences can then be overlaid with cultural differences. At this point lesson or training plans can become difficult to formulate. In his study of nurses’ learning styles Rob Burton helpfully observes that Problem Based Learning (PBL) could be considered in order to benefit students of all learning style preferences (Burton, 2009).
Anthropologists Mead and Benedict had the conviction that all societies, modern and traditional, have the same basic problems only the answers differed. When considering cultures and their supernumerary differences we can start to realise the difficulties in accommodating them in a coherent and robust approach to learning.
According to Inkeles and Levinson the problems common to all societies from a sociological perspective were:
