Academic Paper(3 page): Language Endangerment (Linguistics)

Hello Freelancers, I would like a undergraduate college level essay done on ONE of the two topics below (Linguistics): 1. Take the Pulse of an Endangered Language Visit [login to view URL] and choose an endangered language from anywhere in the world. Use what is on the site and any other resources you can find to give an overview of the language, focusing on its endangerment situation. Here are some things to include: • Where is it spoken? • What language family does it belong to? • How many speakers does it have? • Are children still learning the language? • How endangered is it? Do people agree on how endangered it is? • How much and what kinds of documentation does it have (grammars, dictionaries, etc.)? • Are there newer (i.e. since 2000) sources of information on this language, or are all the sources old? • In which domains is it still viable? • Is the language taught in schools? Is it recognized by the government? • What are some factors which are causing the language to be endangered? • Are there any revitalization efforts for this language? What is being done? • What are speakers’ attitudes toward their language? *Remember, all ELCat data is cited from other sources, so you need to cite those sources for specific pieces of information you get from the site. 2. Call to Arms Write an op-ed for publication in a popular newspaper or magazine. Your job is to explain to the public why language endangerment matters, why they should care, and what can/should be done. It’s also fine to use your personal experiences with language as evidence, as long as they’re relevant. E.g. “my grandmother speaks Okinawan, and I am terribly sad that I never learned Okinawan from her, because she has no one to talk to in her native language, and I will probably never have a chance to learn my heritage language before it disappears.” Requirements: • Be a minimum of 3 pages, Times New Roman or Arial, double-spaced, 12-point, 1” margins • Include at least 3 references. At least 2 of these should be scholarly sources (journal articles, books), NOT websites! • Have all facts clearly cited and checked • Have been carefully proofread for spelling, grammar, and logical flow.
