Gift Cert Fix

I need someone that knows php and smarty to fix the gift certificate feature on my x-cart shopping cart. Currently the way it works is wacked. If a client buy a gift certificate now for say $20 it should be taking it off the amount owed and then leaving the balance to be paid by credit card or whatever. Currently it only allows you to use that certificate on an item of the exact same price.
Full access to the code will be allowed, but must be distroyed upon completion. Since this is a finished project that currently has code in it for a coupon that works the way the certificate should it should be an easy mod to copy that code and intigrate it into the gift certificate code some how.
