Magneto - Connect (v1.7.1) Permission problem cant install modules. Fix

I have magneto v1.7.1. I was locked out of magneto connect a while ago, the admin pass didnt work with connect pass.

I followed a guide on the internet and reset it, it now works login wise.

But i have a problem with permissions that means i cant install modules.

I need the turpentine for varnish module installed and the bug fixed.

Access is via PLESK and FTP and SSH can maybe be arranged but i have a feeling its turned off.

Please dont so something crazy like leave folder permissions on 777. Due it being a bad policy.
