Contest Brief

Abyss is the app containing dozens of breathtaking chat-stories for teens. We tell horror, mystic, romantic, fantastic, crime stories and many others. Now we are looking for talented authors who will write an exciting story for us that will become a bestseller.

Learn more about the app:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=zahleb.me

This is a writing contest. We will consider all the stories submitted before the deadline and reward the authors of the 10 most successful works (those that meet the requirements for the story content and format and are really exciting). The reward for each author entering the TOP-10 is $50.

The author of the most exciting story will be chosen by the app users (according to the app statistics on the stories rating and readability) and will get the main prize of $300.

By submitting your story to us, you agree that it can be published in the application (in case of getting into the TOP-10 awarded authors).

Our chatfiction.team@gmail.com is waiting for emails from you containing links to stories in the Google Sheets table document format (ex.: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1rwN9EjE3Mw__GmQQYHLxjW7PzPtHrGv6TOK20ISF1Vg/edit#gid=0 )

The story content requirements:

- The genre may be fantasy, fiction, mystery, horror (you can choose one or several of them);
- The age rating is 12+ (no explicit sexual scenes or violence description);
- Try not to use author’s speech at all or minimize it (the app stories are based on text messages or dialogs, author’s speech is acceptable but undesirable);
- The opening lines should intrigue (it is important that the story begins in an extraordinary way and capture the reader's interest immediately);
- Let the main character be a teenager (gender does not matter, the main thing is that young readers can associate themselves with the main character);
- Create a charismatic and mysterious antagonist (in this story there should be an ambiguous villain, frightening, but provoking sympathy);
- Use romance as a side storyline (despite the fact that there may be a hint of a romantic relationship between the characters, the story should not be just romance);
- Make extraordinary characters (the dialogs of the main characters should captivate and capture, and this is rather about the personality and strength of the main characters);
- Involve the protagonist in a situation where the villain has power (we consider this point important for the development of characters and the relationship between them).

The story format requirements:

- Stick to the chat format (the structure of a story is a chat or an oral dialog consisting of short text messages or speeches);
- Use the online Google Sheets table for the story text – two columns are used (see the example by reference): the first one is for character’s name, the second one is for his/her text or speech; the author’s speech (if highly needed) is written in the second column – in this case, the first column remains empty);
- Write at least 5 episodes of the story (one episode contains 100-200 lines in the table);
- Pay attention to literacy (there should be no spelling, punctuation, grammar and usage mistakes in your story).

Please, send your stories marked as “Competition” to chatfiction.team@gmail.com.

Wishing you great inspiration and success!

      Thank for sharing your story with us! We've enjoyed reading it, however, unfortunately, this time it was not included in the list of TOP-10. The stories that have passed the qualifying round were announced and published last week and are now tested in the application, the most exciting one will be chosen by the app users (according to the app statistics on the stories rating and readability). The winner of the contest will be announced until November 18 on the contest page.

      Thank you and have a great day!

    Contest Holder,

    I have a doubt. Should I submit my story here or should I mail it? Hoping for a quick reply from you. Thank you!

    It says that we need to write at least 5 episodes of the story. Does this mean that we need to write 5 different versions of the same story? Or, do we need to make followups for episode 1? If so, do the episodes need to be within "the same day", or can the story last for 2-3 days?

    Contest Holder,

    Can you provide more clarity on the range of word length (minimum/maximum)? Also, as per Freelancer’s Terms & Conditions, we aren’t allowed to communicate with you off-site.

    https://www.freelancer.com/about/terms
    https://www.freelancer.com/faq/view.php

    Instead of emailing you our entry submissions, could we perhaps submit 2 entries (i.e. one entry containing the actual story and another entry containing a placeholder for the entry containing the actual story)? So, if I submit a story and it enters as Entry #5, let’s say; I’d submit another entry as a reference to Entry #5, which would have its own entry number (e.g. Entry #8).

      Once the submission deadline ends, you’d review all of the actual entries, but instead of awarding the entry that you like, you’d award said entry’s reference entry. So, if you liked Entry #5, you’d award Entry #8 instead. This way, only you and the entrants to the contest would be able to view the actual submissions. And, once the decision has been made on what should be awarded, everyone can just withdraw their actual work. This way, the work isn’t publicly available through Freelancer. Once a contest closes, all entries, with the exception of those that have been withdrawn become viewable.

      And, assuming you see at least one entry that meets your requirements, how soon do you expect to award a winner? How long after the deadline do you suppose?

      If possible, please reserve the option of rejecting an entry for cases in which an entry is completely unrelated to the task at hand. Rating an entry as a 1-star entry would carry the same affect. See the links below.
