Contest Brief

This is a contest for an illustration or photomanipulation to illustrate a mythological high-fantasy short story. The finished illustration should fit and accompany the story. If possible should illustrate a scene in the story.

NO CARTOONS!!
* 16:9 Aspect ratio. Min 4000px on the long edge
* 300DPI RGB JGEG and associated design files (editable .PSD)
* Winner will award full copyright to image and design files.

The story is called The First Dragen and you can read it here:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1LhCvwP_hmOXYBEZDfnklDsBWZ5Xyo1NGb7rDHna2aD4/edit?usp=sharing

Image may be digitally painted or a photomanipulation. If a photo manipulation please note it should NOT look like a photograph and be photo-realistic. It instead should have an illustrated or painted feel to it.

If a photomanipulation you may only use source images that you have the commercial right to use (NO GOOGLE images!). You will be required to tell me what those sources are with links. You may not use just a single stock image that someone else has created. You must have a composite. You must have significantly changed the stock image/s. If a photomanipulation is chosen as the winner you will be required to provide the source files (editable .PSD). This photomanipulation must be your new original work not used or posted in any other place.

If an illustration or digital painting, it must be your original work not posted or used in any other place. when you post your entry also include the work in progress sketch, before inking or coloring.

Forgive these requirements. They are to safeguard both you and me. It is to prevent others from trying to enter work that is not theirs and/or not their own original work.

Audience and style.

Audience:

The primary audience will be RPG game players, particularly those into TTRPG's like Dungeons and Dragons, and Pathfinder (approx 40M) approximately 85% of the audience is male. approximately 75-80% of the target audience is 34 or younger.

The secondary audience is readers of epic and high fantasy. Unlike most fiction, where most readers are female, approximately 70% of these readers are male. The majority of the readers are 25-49.

That said, from experience, the audience leans toward more gritty darkr themes. This is particularly true when doing males, creatures, monsters, and landscape-based art.

If you use Male or Female characters

Men and males tend to be "heroes" of "villains" very masculine, powerful, and appearance tends to be based around physique, weapons, magic, and armor.

Females tend to be strong characters but always with high sex appeal. For the most part, they are very buxom and have attractive figures. They tend to have far less clothing than their male counterparts and show a lot of skin. For the most part long hair. “Evil” characters are "exotic" and darkly sexy and attractive. Even if they have a monster or ugly face, half-animal, or covered in blood, they still tend to have big boobs and well-shaped rear end... and that is what the audience notices. “Good” female characters tend to be weapon-toting or spell-casting scantily clad "heroines" OR prim and proper sisters, mothers, queens, and princesses, goddess, priestess - the untouchable classic beauties the reader can never have but secretly lusts after, usually with long ornate flowing dresses and or jewelry, often updos... very feminine.

For the most part, the predominantly male target audience is "role-playing" whether playing a game or reading a book. If the character playing or reading about is male - it is someone they want to be. If the character is female it is someone they want to bed.

All-in-all my target audience is male, and the art should be aimed towards that audience.

I was excited about this lore. I intend to make an art involving the birth of dragons. If you like my art, I would love to work with you throughout the project.

Yes, this is one of the intents of the contests to find an artist (or artists) to help me illustrate this project. I have several hundred stories, articles, or chapters written ove the last 25-years for this world. I am looking for some long-term artists.

You'll probably get stolen designs as well. Just double check before you pick a winner.

Yes. I have several ways of checking. The community here is also quite good at letting me know if someone has stolen someone else's design.

It appears that some have tried to enter work that is not their own and they do not have the right to use or sell. Please ensure you only submit your own work. If you are using an element that is stock and you have the commercial right to use the element in your new composite, this is fine. Clearly advise this in your entry.

You describe male and female character on the descriptions, which one is this contest for? should we add the character into the dragon scene?

Adding a character is up to the artist's discretion. You can do it or not. You may, for example, have Barak and Roadius in the cave killing Kellium. You may have Siberlee talking to Kalos, you may have Siberlee and Sola trying to create an egg, or all the gods and goddesses in the scene where Kalos is acusing Barak... or you may not have human/god characters in the scene at all. It is up to you as an artist. I put that in there in case artists did want to include human/god characters in the illustration.

I have noticed a few entries are leaning toward a children's audience and are a bit cartoony. I just want to advise against that. That is not what I am looking for. you may want to go to google images and do a search for "Dark Fantasy" to get a better idea of the look and feel or poke around in the mernac.com WIP site.
