Contest Brief

Your brief is to design the concept for the ultimate ecotourist cabins and accommodation. Our prized land is located in a relatively cool climate, set 1000m above sea level in the picturesque Towac Valley in the Upper Molong Creek Catchment and surrounded by apple and cherry orchards, national parks and cool climate vineyards near Orange in NSW, Australia.

We are seeking an energy efficient or even "off the grid" north facing design featuring solar energy, capture and re-use of rainwater.

The design should feature at least some corrugated iron cladding.

We have, in stage 1, an area of 631m2 - so we are seeking a concept layout featuring a mixture of studio rooms, 1 bedroom suites and 2 bedroom (or family suites). The design should appeal to a discerning yet environmentally conscious clientele. Your design/s should reflect your climate awareness.

The awarded freelance designer is expected to be invited back to conduct the detailed design phase for the concept they submit as well as to assist in the masterplan layout of the project in general. Please only submit your concept if you are willing to continue onto the next phase of the project.

For information the community in which we are located, some of the attached information sources may assist:

All work must be completed using a .dwg file, with the .dwg file and/or high resolution concept design supplied at the end of the contest.

Contest may close early, so submit at your earliest convenience. More than 1 design submission may be submitted per applicant.

Contestants should note the cold winter weather and the need to capture as energy efficiently as possible winter sunshine into the living and bedroom areas of the tourist cabins.

Hello, I am seeking an innovative design however I have noticed these styles of cabins and I do quite like. I would like to see a mixture of free-standing and perhaps some adjoining cabins. This is a design competition to design the concept for an ecotourist accommodation development, so really the design is up to you. Whatever you submit must be your own original work.

Hello, I understand your suggestion for sealed work, but in the interest of transparency I decline to do so. You are welcome to submit your design with 5 minutes to go in the contest if you are concerned that your design is SO good that other freelancers will steal your concepts? Alternatively, I reserve the right to end the contest early. I think the only safeguards that you have is to do very high quality work and rely upon by 5 star rating as a Freelancer employer to provide confidence to you that if your work is exceptionally good then I will recognise and reward you perhaps very fast and move to the detailed design with you very promptly?

we are located in the southern hemisphere, so any trees to the north may interfere with sunlight and the panoramic vista. We are not expecting to grow anything to the north of ecocabins in excess of 1-2m.
