Writing Computer Programs This is what I do most of the time and it’s good work which I enjoy. I always recommend that people use ready made off the shelf programs like Sage if at all possible. That way as you share the development costs with so many other people they are effectively cheap and superb value for money. That said most businesses seem to have special requirements that the off the shelf programs just can’t match and that’s where I come in. I write programs that are designed to meet the user’s exact needs. Working out what’s needed This is where it gets complicated – most developers will spend a long time with you discussing what your needs are, getting into all of the precise details, asking you what should happen when and then draw up a detailed specification that you have to sign off as the agreed specification which be followed to the letter. This is usually because the people who do this initial analysis are not those who write the programs so you have to have an exact blueprint to work from. Then it’s passed to the programmer and they do the work to the specification – then everyone acts all surprised when the client sees the program and says that’s not what I really need. A better way I don’t like that approach. I like to get a feel for the problem, ask what you’re expecting it do, how you do the job now and then agree a strategy for delivering the facilities. Then at the earliest stage I’ll show you screens – you’ll then see the reality of what you said you wanted and it will change the way you look at things. Frequently we change just about everything at this stage – but that’s fine as we haven’t invested days drawing up a blueprint that’s as much use as a chocolate teacup. Talking Don’t get me started – no really don’t get me started I can talk for England! If we don’t work together as the system evolves then the project will fail – that’s certainly been my experience and in order to do that we must trust each other and talk. Communication is the most important part of any project and I have declined work because I’ve felt unable to get a rapport with a new customer. With 20 years experience I’d expect to be able to help in most situations. If I can’t help then I bet I know someone who can. Many issues that baffle you only do that because you’ve not met them before and I probably have. You need someone practical who will talk your language and understand your concerns.
