My last full-time job involved incident response for a web hosting company. Unwanted traffic problems were a regular occurrence, and something I dealt with on a weekly basis. I can do this using iptables rules, if given known IP ranges that the crawlers operate from. Alternatively, I could configure Apache to block based on domain name.

All you need is iptables :) It could block any ip by ip address itself, or, if needed, by ip and subnet.
