OpenCV detect objects (outlines) in an image

I have an image of a shelf of items and want to detect where these different items are. In some cases, some items may not be there, and I also want to detect that there is a void (there are no items there). I also want to count/number these item: Like shelf1-item1, shelf1-item2, etc.
