We are a company that creates online courses for creatives in the fields of music and graphic design. Previously, we have hosted all our courses on Teachable. Recently, we have built a platform based on Wordpress that utilizes the Buddyboss/Learndash LMS to handle our courses. The transactions are handled by WooCommerce, which communicates with ActiveCampaign to retrive tags from user profiles to match them with the correct course access.
Yesterday, we wanted to open up access to some of our existing students to beta test the new platform, a soft launch to weed out any bugs and issues with the platform before we take it public.
We sent out an email announcing the opening to our newsletters, and we pretty much got 3-500 people immediately trying to access the platform and sign up. Within 2 minutes, we/and others were getting 502 Bad Gateway messages.
We were using a cloud based hosting on Kinsta, and immediately upgraded to their Enterprise 4 plan, at $1500/mo. We were pretty sure that should be able to handle such a small amount as 500 people at a time. It was not, we tried a few solutions recommended by them, but ultimately nothing seemed to work. Things stabilized and some students were able to make purchases during those two hours (about 150 people), though most people were geting 502 messages. It seemed to get better once the load to the site started to die off a bit, and it was averaging 100-200 at a time trying to access.
We have now shut off the site for new registrations, while the people that purchased access got access on the inside. The platform is pretty stable and I am able to navigate there and use all the functions, and we are not getting any more 502 requests anymore. We are looking at moving hosting, but we are not sure if that will solve the issue.
Wordpress is giving us PHP Errors and warnings, I have uploaded some screenshots that hopefully could be helpful. One of them is "php error file exists open open_basedir"
Another alarming thing is that some users reported strange anomalies like wrong items being added to the cart, and even seing other people's contact info in their forms during checkout when the server was overloaded the most, and everyone (including us trying to fix the issues) were getting 502 messages.
Therefore, we would greatly appreciate any help from an expert that can help look at our tech stack and setup, and potentially help find the root of the issue we are facing, and help determine if it is simply due to a third party plugin, a miscommunication between different aspects of our tech, or that it simply has to be rebuilt from scratch. (we hope not)
I have attached a couple of images from the PHP warnings in WP, as well as a picture of the general platform, to give you SOME picture of what we are looking at.
Here is a link to some screenshots: [login to view URL]
We're looking for someone with extensive knowledge building robust, LMS Wordpress solutions that can handle higher volumes with high security to help find and resolve the problems causing our issues.
I am the co-founder of the business, and not the developer, but the ones building the tech stack will be awake in a couple of hours and can give more information and guidance.
We would greatly appreciate any help with this stressful issue as it is pretty time sensitive and urgent on our end since we got some clients on the inside who have paid, as well as clients waiting to sign up.
Thank you,
Arn
