Create two buttons to update status of an element on the database.

There are quite a lot of ways to go about it. Simplest one to fit the budget may be to hook the button to the current URL adding a parameter identifying the item to update. Catching this parameter early enough during the new request and sending the UPDATE to the database before the item's data is read again. It can therefore be displayed with the new status active. Of course there are more elegant methods available.
