create mobile version for existing osCommerce 2.2-MS2 webshop

I have an existing osCommerce 2.2-MS2 webshop, running on a Linux server, with PHP Version 5.1.6
I use paypal to handle payments.
I have set up this webshop myself, and do the maintenancy myself. I want to create a mobile version for this online store. The software should be smart enough to detect if a user accesses the site from a mobile device, and offer the user the choice to go to the mobile or desktop site.
I know that osCommerce 2.2-MS2 should be upgraded to osCommerce 2.2-RC2a (or osCommerce 2.3), and that a conversion needs to be done to tableless CSS. However, I do not have the time to research how to do this, so I need assistance.
If required, I can set up a "development site", i.e. copy the OSCommerce setup to a separate website which can be used to develop/test.
Note: The company where I do the webhosting is usually not very cooperative, and very slow to respond.
I have listed this as a simple project. Most (if not all) of the required work is upgrading, installing add-ons.
