Hello Sir I am a student of classical studies. I have done your work. Please read my excerpt:
The word arête, which means ‘virtue’ in greek, is a central theme in most of Homeric characters’ lives. Though it is not limited to virtue alone but has wider meaning such as "being the best you can be", or "reaching your highest human potential". It covers many qualities like bravery, intelligence, perseverance and hardship – all what an individual can do to reach the final and best result or in homeric sense, what your fate has destined for you. It is all the abilities and potential available to a human being whether man or woman. In ancient Greek world, one’s actions were more of prime importance than anything else. However, arête covers intellect as well as one’s deeds.
In Homer’s Odyssey, Penelope, the wife of adventurous hero Odysseus symbolizes arête. That she is pious and strives till the end, against the suitors that have arrived for her and remains loyal to her undying love for Odysseus. On the other hand, Odysseus, having fought ten years war and then lost in sea for years still posses’ effectiveness, potential and virtue in his character. Though he spends time with Calypso and Circe, in his heart he is still aware that his virtuous wife is waiting for him and is not content until he meets her. Furthermore, Odysseus’ clever escape from and defeat of Polyphemus are examples of his natural areté, the qualities that make him a leader.
