The ‘89 Grand Final between Geelong and Hawthorn had everything. High drama, blistering pace, amazing skills and a barnstorming finish. It is stamped into the annals of sporting legend and folklore. The record books will show that Hawthorn coach Allan Jeans orchestrated one of the most remarkable game plans in history, winning by a slender six points. Jeans being an ex-policeman formulated “Operation Tackle” along the lines of a strategic police mission. The objective was to foil Geelong’s formidable offense.

Geelong’s game plan was to overrun opponents in a shootout. Why not? Coach Malcolm Blight had the firepower in goal-kicking legend Gary Ablett Snr. Blight didn’t care how many goals the opposition kicked as long as Geelong kicked more. Ablett equalled a sixty-one-year record that day with a nine goal haul. Winning the Norm Smith medal for best player afield, albeit for the losing team. His spectacular feat reflecting what could have been for the Cats and raising the big question... HOW ON EARTH DID THEY LOSE?

Your mission should you choose to accept it: Attached is my analysis of the 1st Quarter of the 1989 Victorian Football League Grand Final. It was the last game before the inauguration of the Australian Football League. I want you to research everything there is to know about this game and write a report with some flair. I'm not after the statistics so much, but the way the game was played, the feelings of the players, what was the dram that evolved, who was affected and how. I have attached my own analysis of the first quarter. You will write your own analysis of the final 3 quarters from your research. Use the same style I have used, watch the game on youtube, dig out all the blogs, newspaper stories... anything you can and come up with your own analysis. A page a Quarter should do it.

Here's more info...

I'm writing a book about contemporary Australian workplaces and I've found a connection between operational discipline and the legendary 1989 VFL football Grand Final. It explores the differences in game plans for both teams as the characteristics which won and lost the game. In particular, “Operation Tackle” was Hawthorn coach Allan Jeans’ legacy and brainchild. A veritable smorgasbord of tactics workplace leaders can exploit to instil “true” leadership and “real” accountability. It’s a treatise on dedication to fundamentals both leaders and workers will enthusiastically buy into. The message is simple, if you want to achieve any goal or objective in the workplace, you must find a way to align the values of your workforce with that of the company. (?) discovers the “secret sauce” that successful coaches employ to generate motivation and resilience amongst their players. A formula you can start applying in your workplace today.

The 1989 VFL Grand Final was a real bruiser of a match. Right from the start Mark Yeates ran through Hawthorn champion Dermott Brereton leaving him with broken ribs and a torn kidney. It was later revealed this was a premeditated strategy to protect Geelong’s star midfielder Paul Couch (Brownlow Medal Winner) and keep Brereton out of the match. It was a punishing, physical game where Brereton’s remarkable comeback inspired Hawthorn and foiled a spirited fightback from Geelong. Despite nine goals from Geelong champion Gary Ablett Snr, Hawthorn clung on to create history and win back-to-back flags.

Summary: Research and write the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Quarters of the 1989 VFL Football Grand Final. See attachment for example of the 1st quarter (already written) and some research links.
