Assignment Brief

You are a team of 4 graduates recently recruited by a major retail organisation into your first graduate job on an 18 month training programme. You have been seconded to the HR department and have been given a project to create a Blog to inform line managers of some of the latest trends and thinking in managing people at work. The company is facing an increasingly competitive trading environment and needs to improve the way it manages its workforce to ensure that they achieve the highest levels of performance and deliver excellent customer service. Four areas that the senior team have identified as ones they would like you to investigate are listed below. Your team has been tasked with carrying out research into these four topics to produce on online Blog that can be accessed by the line managers throughout the organisation prior to the Company conference when discussions will be held on how to encourage employees to ‘go the extra mile’

1. Well-being – PREVENTATIVE initiatives that can be used to manage absence (3 pages)

2. Work Life Balance (3 pages)

To ensure that the BLOG is read your team has been asked to pay particular attention to the creative use of space and produce an eye catching and attractive BLOG which captures the key issues around each topic so that the Directors and Senior Managers in particular of the company will pay attention to it. To produce this you must give attention to the overall appearance of your work as it needs to look professional, be accurate and up to date as well as make an immediate impression. For each topic you need to find material on the following:

• Definitions of the topic under review

• Current contextual data (UK based) to show what is happening in the wider business arena e.g. current facts and figures relating to the topic area. Use several up to date sources to show trends and patterns

• Two examples of company practice being used in the UK – how is each company dealing with the topic area and what benefits have they achieved. Ensure that you take each company example from a different source.

• Identify the main benefits and barriers or challenges that any company could face in addressing the topic under review. These should be drawn from a range and mix of published research evidence and not be your own personal opinion.

• For each topic area you need to summarise whether this is an area that the company should pay attention to or not based on what your team has found.
