The project is to create an OS X application to automatically tag PDF, plaintext, HTML, Microsoft word and PowerPoint files. The actual tagging will be done by a 3rd party: OpenCalais - a free web service offered by the Reuters company. Tagging in this context refers to the use of the OpenMeta convention.
To do this I want to create on the local machine a mySQL database to record what files have been processed and other critical logging information related to the application’s activities.
The business objective of this application is to make a body of information (a document repository) easy to search with Spotlight or other mdfind tools.
In other words the metadata stored is to trigger the Spotlight indexer to add the data to the Spotlight DB, allowing it to be searchable. That is what I will also be doing in Devonthink Office Pro – the commercial knowledge management application on the Mac. So the ultimate need is to enrich the Devonthink repository documents with the OpenCalais tags.
I need someone to program the components as my scripting skills are only basic. A great deal of the desired application can be delivered through API’s, Apple Services and AppleScript. So I am looking for someone who is an expert OS X scripter. I think that a background in natural language programming or similar will be a plus and if there is a freelancer already into metadata tagging technology that will be perfect.
A full requirements specification/design document will be made available to the successful freelancer.
