you need to explore and answer the question "How does freedom relate to books in Farenheit 451"?
write an essay of around 2,000 words. The audience for the essay will be readers familiar with your chosen literary text, but these readers may not have read the text with the same depth and attention as you. One purpose of the essay is to demonstrate something to readers that they may not otherwise understand about the literary text. In other words, you should draw on what fascinates, puzzles, or troubles you about the poem, novel, or play in order to pose a research question. As you research and write the essay, you inquire into, investigate, and analyze that question, eventually articulating a substantive and supportable thesis.
You do this primarily by rigorously close reading and analyzing the literary text. You also should draw on at least two additional quality sources. Recall that you can use a source for:
• BACKGROUND information helpful to your argument (beyond plot summary). For example, you might draw on a source’s explanation of the text’s historical context–literary, political, legal, etc. Perhaps a source has something useful to offer regarding the author’s life and work. Or, maybe it speaks to the text’s reception among readers. There are any number of possibilities.
• ARGUMENT. For example, you might disagree with or extend a source’s argument–e.g., refining or qualifying the source’s claim, providing new evidence, etc. (You did this earlier in the semester when you discussed Sara Schotland’s argument regarding the actions of Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters (in Trifles).)
• METHOD. For example, you might apply a source’s concept or definition, or its means of reading, analysis, or critique. (For example, you might consider how Sara Schotland explores legal history to understand characters’ actions, and then apply the same approach to another text—e.g., looking to the history of the trial of Sacco and Vanzetti to explain the sense of inaction in “Justice Denied in Massachusetts.”)
For more on using sources, review “resources on research (BEAM)” (in Week 7). Be sure to integrate the literary text and other sources. Integrating these texts means introducing and explaining them in enough detail (but not too much). It also means drawing on or responding to the sources to the extent necessary to make your argument (without losing the thread of your own argument).
