The project that will be designed is a device that attaches to a netball ring, which will be used to count the goals scored. For this project, the designer will use an Arduino Uno board and an ultrasonic distance sensor. This project works by the “trigger” pin on the ultrasonic sensor, sending out a sound wave. This sound wave bounces off the closest object and returns back to the sensor’s “echo” pin. Based on this, the designer is able to set the default distance (distance to the other side of the ring) which then allows a detection if the distance is interrupted and a smaller distance is recorded – this means the netball has crossed the sound wave and a goal is scored. For this project the designer will also be using an 4-digit, 7 segment LED segment display (scoreboard) so the consumer of the product is able to see a visual of the current score.
