Convert vbulletin db from windows-1256 to utf8

I have a 1GB vbulletin database that needs to be converted to utf8. The content is in arabic. My attemmpts at a conversion using a sql dump and iconv have resulted in some errors on import to mysql database. This should be a very simple task.
