Being a business analyst in itself is probably not your goal I imagine you would want to move onto managerial and higher positions early in your career.

Have been a business analyst for 9 years, from junior to senior levels. Have led team of analysts and helped to mentor a number of analysts over this time.
Have worked as IT business analyst as well as a "pure" business analyst - in that examining business problems, creating business cases and scoping out projects.
Have worked across 7 industries and have had to deal with some pretty tricky situations as times. Having 8 years of project management helps, as in smaller projects I would play a dual role. I did complete a PMP but have not certification in business analysis.
I think my engineering degree provided sound basis for logical thinking and problem solving.
