Custom programming on an Into the Darkroom Template

I purchased a basic website template from Into the Darkroom. Once I got into it, I find I can not program the site to do what I want. It's possible to make site more custom to fit my style and functionality, but I do not know java script, css or PHP coding. Please let me know your experience and what experience you have with designing sites for artistic professionals. I am an event planner. I would also like some references and to know what will be the project turn-around time.
