In many cases there is a need to replace the physical keyboard with an interface that allows commands to be input. Although the exact design of interface will vary with the specific disability, there are some general response time values that need to be adjusted to tune the interface. An example of such an interface system is the establishment of a grid array of labelled icons on the monitor screen together with an auto scanning cursor which the user can stop when it crosses the chosen icon ??" this initiates some desired action ; as per the icon label. This project is concerned with the building of a simple linear array of icons together with a scanning cursor to allow response time measurements to be made and interface design criteria to be established.
