We wish to demonstrate the thermoacoustic effect for students and others interested in the subject. Please keep in mind that this will be on display so it is important that it is both attractive and instructive to view. The goal of this project is to design, build, test and fully document a device based on a previous example. All deliverables are due no later than 6 weeks after award of project. Design can and should be based on the attached published research paper (we take no credit for this work) and of the same approximate capability and size. Because this will be a display item for demonstrations, the fit, finish and attractiveness are very important. Where possible mechanical fittings shaw be screwed or friction fit so that the device can be disassembled for cleaning or to provide students with closer examination of components. Used of adhesives should be kept to a minimum to allow for disassembly. All surfaces shall be deburred, smoothed, and true. An inexpensive "tone generator", speaker, and 50 to 100 watt amplifier shall be included. The tone generator shall be capable of producing sinewave frequencies ranging from 100Hz to 3000Hz and provide easy adjustment by screwdriver or knob. The amplifier shall be fully enclosed and have adjustable power output from 5% to 100%. Amplifier shall be impedence matched to speaker and it is preferred that the primary power source is 12VDC or 110VAC/60Hz. Speaker shall be capable of handling maximum amplifier output and approximately 4" in diameter. Electical connections shall be by commercial grade terminal posts or [url removed, login to view] mechanical portion of the system shall be attached (with removeable fasteners such as screws) to a stable base. Tone generator, amplifier, and power supply(s) shall be enclosed in finished cabinets of suitable metal or plastic. Cables shall be neatly fabricated to instumentation standards. Testing must document at least a 10 deg C differential temperature after 15 minutes of opertation. Two small LCD or LED temperature indicators shall be integrated into the system such that students can observe temperature differntials. Upon completion and testing the system shall be fully documented with computer generated "as built" drawings with thorough detail such that a high school science student can build an identical system. Documentation shall include all electrical schematics, mechanical fabrication drawings (suitable for any laboratory or basic machine shop) and full parts listing. Please see attachment.
