Generation and Gender Social Problems Exam Due April 24th, 2015 **** Students found to be plagiarizing will automatically fail this exam**** This assignment asks you to take a detached look at how you and your family view social problems. It asks you to do this through an integration of two types of data: 1) Interviews with family members or family friends; and 2) Course readings, which you will draw on to contextualize and explain what social problem or social problems have meant for your family over the past several generations. You are of course welcome to supplement the course readings with other relevant sources. If you perceive a problem with this, please consult me. Interviews. Conduct a minimum of four in-depth interviews of family members or family friends of different generations (ideally someone younger than you, your parent, and/or your grandparent) about what they have viewed as a social problem and/or what the presently view as a social problem. You need to interview at least two males and two females for the four interviews. Ask those older than you what the view as the biggest social problem(s) in their generation and what they think is the biggest social problem facing UAE and/or Oman today. If asking a someone younger than you, only ask them what they perceive is the biggest social problem they face in present day UAE and/or Oman. Be sure to highlight any differences you see between male and females, in regards to social problems. Focus on what their occupation and economic standing were/are, what kind of life they have led, how they perceived their position in society, and what changes they experienced over the years. How do they presently view the social problem should be the focus of your interview? Try to get a sense both of what social problems meant for their lives. Take notes during your interviews with an eye to using quotations from them in your eventual paper. Do not write your paper as a summary of your interviews; the interviews are intended to provide data for your own analysis of social problems. Course Readings. I expect you to demonstrate your mastery of the readings or understanding of social problems in this assignment. Indeed, the readings should help you put in context and to conceptualize and explain what you find out through interviews. Please adhere to the APA style guidelines provided. This is the “SOC 202 - APA Paper Guidelines” document in blackboard. Your Paper Write a paper of approximately 4-6 pages analyzing your generation and gender perspective on social Problems over past generations and exploring how it has shaped your socialization and personal development. The title page and bibliography are extra pages. Weave together interview material and course readings to present your story; do not make these separate sections. While it is certainly ok to explore the importance of other factors besides social problems, do not lose sight of it--this is a paper about your health background and the significance it has had for you. At the end, you may want to address whether this exercise has affected your understanding of yourself or your family. Your paper should include a brief section on method in which you explain whom you interviewed and what kinds of settings you focused on for your ethnographic observations. References to the readings should involve proper APA, ASA, MLA-style citation both in-text and at the end in the reference list. Please avoid lengthy quotations.
