Project Description

Philosophical Bioethics

Do you think it is ethically justifiable that this man should be allowed to donate his only remaining kidney to his son? What ethical considerations, including respect for his individual autonomy, are relevant here? Explain and defend your answer against possible counter arguments.

Case study: A 66 year-old man has two sons. One developed kidney disease in his early twenties and his father donated one of his kidneys to be transplanted into his son. His second son has now also developed kidney disease at the age of 34 and needs daily dialysis in order to stay alive. His father would now like to donate his second kidney in order to increase the quality of life of his son. He is aware of the risks and that even if successful he will have to undergo dialysis but is determined that this is what he wants to do.
